Ryan Fox, founder of Denver-based Kindman and The Grass Station, says the KTVA report presents a realistic view of the challenges and opportunities legal marijuana could bring to Alaska
DENVER (November 3, 2014) -- Ryan Fox, CEO and founder of one of Colorado’s largest recreational marijuana companies, believes the recent news report that focused attention on his operations will help Alaska voters understand the benefits – and challenges – of legalizing marijuana for adults.
Kindman cannabis and The Grass Station dispensary, both founded by Fox, were featured in a news report aired by KTVA-TV, the CBS affiliate in Anchorage, Alaska, ahead of the state’s mid-term elections. You can view video of that report here.
On Tuesday, voters in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, D.C. and about a dozen other municipalities decide whether to join Colorado and Washington State in legalizing recreational marijuana use for adults.
During the KTVA report, Fox noted how Colorado’s cannabis business, along with state officials, had to essentially write its own rules on how to best regulate and enforce the growth, distribution and sale of recreational marijuana.
As a result, he said, the cannabis industry is now employing thousands of people in Colorado, while bringing in tens of millions of dollars in state revenue -- and so far with only a small number of disruptions or mishaps.
“I’m pleased that the public could see how our operations work, and also that we had a chance in helping to educate Alaska voters,” Fox said, “by letting people actually see how a marijuana producer grows, packages and sells its products.”
“The cannabis industry is best compared to real-world agriculture,” he added, “just like you would see on a farm. The only difference is its scale, its harvesting cycles and that most of the work takes place indoors. In those ways it’s tremendous and unique.”
Medical marijuana is currently legal in at least 23 states. And Fox believes helping consumers understand how the marijuana industry works, especially via the examples set this past year by Colorado, will go a long way in helping to bring the business out of the shadows.
“As each new state comes on-line and legalizes cannabis, it’s going to face its own unique, regional issues,” he said. “And I think there’s a lot that both state regulators and folks elsewhere in the marijuana industry can learn from the experiences we’ve been through here in Colorado.”
